3.0 Liter V6 and 3spd slushbox

'91 Isuzu Trooper XS. My parents bought it slightly used in 1992 and I inherited it in 2000 when I turned 16.
Basically looked just like this '90, but gray.

A green '72 Gran Torino with a green vinyl roof and a green interior. Have I mentioned that I hate green? But I was given the car so I couldn't bitch too much. Then again the engine was blown when it was given to me so there's that. It was more of an educational tool than actual car.

This POS. Cost me $700 to buy, but spent at least $2000 in repairs after only a few months. Guzzled gas, and it was automatic. Good riddance.

I bought mine towards the end of 2012, and I still drive it now.
2000 Peugeot 106. They were built from 1992 to 2004. 1.1 litre straight 4, as you'd expect, and a five speed manual. I still rather like it, though I'll probably be replacing it within the next year or so. Here's one without the 1.1, for shits and giggles:

My first car was handed down to me and my brother, I paid my brother half of the value (€250) so it became mine. 1991 VW Golf mk2 that I had been driving occasionally since I got my license at 18 (minimum age here) but only received at age 27 in 2010.
First car I bought myself was bought with a friend, for a rally through the Austrian Alps. This was a 1997 Subaru Legacy wagon in 2012. I was 29. We paid €500.
First car I bought myself for myself was a month after the Subaru, so also in 2012: 2000 Peugeot 406 coupe. Still my daily driver. Great car.

I started driving in Junior, the 1986 GMC S-15, in 2000. He had been totaled twice before I got it (and a third time in 2003). Junior had a thunderous 2.8L V6 and 4 speed automatic. He would go 0-60 sometimes, and could hit 83 mph, going downhill, with a tailwind (speedo went to 85... a bit lofty if you ask me).
But the first car I had that was *mine* was a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GT coupe, which I got in 2001. Absolutely solid highway cruiser. It was comfortable and just sporty enough for a relatively new driver.

Saved forever to get one of these when I was 17. '92, ESI (aka. lame version). No turbo, no 4G63, automatic and a complete money pit. Blew a water pump, paid a shop for a repair and the derp mechanics obviously didn't understand the concept of an interference engine, and returned the car out of time. 1 month and 6 bent valves later, I sold it for a fraction of what I paid. Still hurts.

'63 Chrysler Newport that was mildly customized in 80's. It was really traditional Finnish custom with metallic blue paint, 5-spoke chrome wheels and blue velour (the same that was used in Saabs and it was the only decent upholstery material that was available here in 80's) interior.
I sold it in the last summer to my parents plumber who really wanted to have it.

It's funny, I owned my Celica All-trac at the same time as my good friend owned one of those (he had the awd-turbo version though) Our cars were very similar on paper, but when I drove his, I noticed that despite being much newer, his car was basically falling apart around its self, while the Celica felt very solid.
I've always liked those, but i've never really wanted to own one since that experience.

This is really the ultimate full cirlce car for me. I grew up in the 80's and LOVED anything with a giant screaming chicken on the hood until I was about 7. Then I started reading car magazines and came to loathe anything Camaro/Trans Am as being unsophisticated piles of garbage.
But now, in my early thirties, i've come back around on them, particularly the malaise era ones. Just so much charm. I can't look at those photos and not think "Man that's pretty boss."

1999 Chevrolet Cavalier base sedan. Got it in 2005 as a hand-me-down (story below).
- 2.2L 4-banger making, when it was shiny and new at least, 115hp
- 3-speed slushbox that, despite the limited gear options, still managed to pick the wrong one
- Suspension that felt like it was welded on solid, yet it rolled like a pig
- Tires that weirdly gripped better when it was wet than in the dry
- Steering that was set in concrete
- Made a horrible racket at highway speeds
- And brakes were terrible and locked up easily
My parents got it new with about 20 miles on the clock in March 1999. It replaced the '90 Ford Tempo that we had to get rid off due to continuous engine problems. My parents originally got the car as a lease as it was only supposed to be temporary until my dad got something else. In July that same year, my dad bought a '99 Toyota Camry to replace the Cavalier for his commute. We kept the Cavalier as a secondary car until the lease ran out, or at least that was the original plan. However, later that same year (I believe October), my mom got a new job at the University and needed her own car. The lease on the Cavalier became a purchase.
The car was handed down to me when I turned 18 in 2005. By then my mom had gotten a different job that allowed her to work from home and didn't need it anymore. It was my car through my last year in high school, all through collage, and a bit into my professional career, though by this point the car's problems were starting to pile up. As my job at the time required me to drive some long distances, I needed reliable transportation. I had the choice of spending my money on fixing the car up or use it as a down-payment on a new car.
I chose the latter...
The Cavalier was replaced by my current '12 Ford Focus (because hatchback!). However, instead of getting rid of it right there and then, my dad decided to keep it as a backup car since it still (mostly) worked. My mom occasionally used it to get groceries if dad was unable to on his way back from work. Eventually my brother bought his '13 Dodge Dart and his old '06 Nissan Sentra became the new backup car as it was younger and in better shape. Since it was no longer needed, the Cavalier served as the trade-in for the brother's Dart, hence why in the picture below it's at a Dodge dealership and yes that is the actual car I had.
Behold the terribleness!

Having driven one for the last two years, I can say with some certainty that your soft spot is far from misplaced! I think the thing I like most about the 106 is that Peugeot put a good amount of effort into making sure that every single model - from the 1.0 to the GTi - was a laugh to drive. They had a real talent for making ordinary, dull cars handle far better than they had any right to back in the nineties.
The S1 Rallye is probably my favourite, too, though I do rather like the look of the S2:
And the GTi is probably the one I'd actually buy, to use everyday:
One of the front-runners for my 1.1's replacement is the 'warm' Citroen Saxo VTR. It's got almost all of the suspension bits from the 106 GTi, but a substantially less exciting - and, as such, more insurance-friendly - engine:
Honestly, though, I'll probably just wait a little longer, and pick up either a 106 GTi, or perhaps - if I'm feeling a little more daring - an old 205 GTi. The 306 GTi-6 presents a rather appealing prospect, too.

that gif is amazing! Yeah, I'm also a pretty big fan of the 306 GTi-6. I love the clean styling of both cars and the intense commitment to FWD handling.
Normally i have a strong preference towards RWD, but the exception is that small percentage of FWD cars that really make handling a top priority. In those cases you usually end up with a car that's every bit as interesting as something RWD and realistically probably more fun in everyday driving.

2002 Jetta GLS, which looked identical to this one:
It was had the 115 HP 2.0 L with the 5-speed slush-box. Not a terrible first car, it had all the creature comforts you could imagine including heated seats and a 6-disc CD-changer. That said, the pre-revision seats were uncomfortable for journeys longer than 40 minutes and the transmission had a tendency to grenade itself every 10,000 miles.
Smelled like crayons inside.

2008 Subaru Legacy. Slushbox.
It was a great car. I got it for $13,500 from a dealer with 16k on it - it was in great shape and used as a loaner. Being a kid, I blacked it out.
I grew out of the murdered out look, and then realized there wasn't much I could do to make it have balls, since it was the slow 2.5 and had a 4-Speed Auto.
I sold it with 38k for $13,200 and bought the S60R
